Ember House, Wynberg Upper. Move in with a suitcase.

A four-bedroom house in a gated complex of six, let whole and fully furnished for stays of a month or more. Fibre throughout, and inverter backup that keeps the lights, and essentials on during power outages. Ten minutes from almost everything you need, hospitals, shopping centers, Constantia Wine Farms close by, and two minutes from the M3.

It is set up for people arriving to work. Doctors on rotation, locums, expats, film crews, anyone starting a new job in a new city. You arrive with your bags. Everything else is here.

What you are not doing

You are not buying furniture for a city you do not know yet. You are not signing a twelve-month lease before you have seen where you will be working. You are not paying a hotel to wash a shirt. Nothing here is shared: not the garden, not the parking, not the front door. For as long as you are here, it is simply where you live.

The house

Three floors. Bedrooms on the top floor, the living floor in the middle, a study and the garden at the bottom.

Upstairs, the main bedroom has a king bed and an ensuite with a shower. The second bedroom has a double, the third has bunk beds. A family bathroom with a bath and a shower serves both. Every bedroom has built-in cupboards, curtains, a fan and a wall heating panel.

The living floor is one open room. A kitchen you will cook in, with a gas stove, oven, dishwasher and fridge, and the pots, plates and cutlery to use them. A dining table and chairs. A living room with a couch, two chairs and a TV. A closed-combustion fireplace with wood storage and tools. Its copper flue runs up past the bedrooms and warms them on its way. Tiled floors and security shutters throughout this floor and the one below.

At garden level, the fourth bedroom is set up as a study: a desk, shutters, and a door that closes. If you would rather it were a bedroom, say so. A bathroom with a shower and a laundry with a washing machine and dryer are on the same floor. The garage takes one car (or two), with further parking in the complex. The garden is walled and serviced monthly.

Working from here

Fibre line in place, fast enough for a video call and multiple devices (cellphones, TV, iPads) streaming at the same time. The study is on its own floor, so a day of calls does not run through the kitchen. The inverter carries the essentials during outages, so a video call does not drop when the power does.

Quiet after a long shift

The complex is gated with remote access. The house sits off the road. Shutters on two floors, curtains upstairs. Radio alarm linked to armed response, and cameras. Come and go at any hour; the gate opens from the car. Early calls and late wraps are nobody's business but yours.

In winter the fire is laid in the living room and the bedrooms are warm from the flue and their own panels. In summer the shutters keep the living floor cool and the garden is where the day ends.

Where it is

Wynberg Upper, on the slopes above the southern suburbs. Victoria Hospital, 2 Military Hospital and Mediclinic Constantiaberg are under two kilometres away. Life Kingsbury and the Claremont business district under five. Red Cross Children's Hospital and the city centre are about ten kilometres, Groote Schuur about eleven, the airport about fourteen. The M3 is two minutes from the gate.

Constantia Village shops, 3 Arts Shopping Centre and restaurants are under two kilometres, with the Alphen Trail beside them for a run before a shift. Kirstenbosch and the Groot Constantia wine estate under five, for the weekends you get. Distances are approximate, measured in a straight line.

The practical things

Let to one household at a time. A family of up to four adults and two children, or up to five adults sharing. The whole house, whether one of you stays or five.

Stays of a month or more. Postings run in odd lengths, so start and end dates are by agreement rather than by the calendar month. Fully furnished, with linen and kitchenware. Invoiced monthly, in a company name if your employer needs that. A signed agreement serves as proof of address.

A weekly housekeeper can be arranged at your choice.

Comfort. Fibre. Inverter. Garden. Close to everything you need.
